Military Sealift Command Vessels

Military Sealift Command Vessel

The conversion of the Soviet vessel GTS "Vaslyaev" to the Military Sealift MPF(E)"LCPL Roy M. Wheat" highlights the most recent experience of Aker Yards Marine with the design of Sealift type ships. This major conversion required extensive evaluation of the original vessel to ensure that MSC requirements could be met, while translation and interpretation of Russian design drawings provided an additional challenge.

Major aspects of the conversion included:

  • Addition of a 120’ mid-body
  • Installation of large deck cranes
  • Re-engine with new Ukrainian gas turbines
  • Installation of cargo hold HVAC
  • Major overhaul of accommodation spaces.

Bender Shipbuilding and Repair in Mobile commenced the conversion, while midbody insertion took place at Tampa Bay Shipbuilding and Repair
Completion and ship trials were performed at Norshipco.

Over the past 10 years AYM has been actively involved in all Military Sealift Command proposals for either new construction or vessel conversion. Our extensive knowledge with the complexity of vessel specific features includes the following:

  • Fire suppression systems
  • Cargo hold ventilation and HVAC systems
  • Vehicle maneuverability and stowage arrangements
  • General cargo handling equipment such as cranes, stern/side ramps and deck hatches

Aquiles

See details 103M Logistics Support Vessel "Aquiles"

AYM designed the Logistics Support vessel "Aquiles" for the Chilean Navy and provided construction supervision and assistance to the shipyard, ASMAR Shipbuilding and Repair, also located in Chile.

The vessel provides transportation of passengers (and troops) and cargo to and from different points on the Chilean coast, including Antarctic territory and insular possessions.

US Army 'LAMP-H

U.S.Army LAMP-H
The LAMP-H is a diesel-powered prototype air cushion vehicle designed in conjunction with Bollinger Shipyards in Louisiana. The craft was designed to meet the requirements of the US Army for transportation of heavy vehicles and equipment from floating support ships to the beach. The design incorporates many unique features such as an aluminum main hull with a steel deck to handle the abrasive environment associated with tracked-vehicles and the use of diesel propulsion to drive the ducted propellers and lift fans. Extensive model tests were performed to verify the directional capability and also the ability to climb a beach.
